Marine Wildlife of Western Puerto Rico
The waters off Puerto Rico's west coast are home to a remarkable diversity of marine life. From migrating humpback whales and passing pods of dolphins to sea turtles, rays, and seabirds, these waters offer a glimpse into a thriving marine ecosystem.
While humpback whales bring us offshore each winter, they're only part of the story.
Humpback Whales
Each winter, humpback whales migrate thousands of miles from their northern feeding grounds to the warm waters of the Caribbean to breed and give birth.
The waters off western Puerto Rico become a seasonal gathering place where males sing elaborate songs, mothers travel with their calves, and whales can be seen breaching, tail-slapping, and surfacing for air.
These extraordinary animals are part of the reason winter in Rincón is so special.
Dolphins
Dolphins are among the most captivating residents of Puerto Rico's coastal and offshore waters. Often traveling in social groups called pods, they're known for their intelligence, curiosity, and remarkable agility.
Bottlenose and Atlantic spotted dolphins inhabit the region, sometimes appearing alongside boats, riding the bow wave, or leaping clear of the water.
Although encounters are never guaranteed, spotting a pod of dolphins is one of the most memorable surprises of a day at sea.
Sea Turtles
Green and hawksbill sea turtles inhabit Puerto Rico's coastal waters, often surfacing briefly for air before disappearing beneath the waves.
Flying Fish
Often seen skimming across the open ocean, flying fish launch themselves from the water and glide remarkable distances above the surface to escape predators.
Spotted Eagle Rays
With their distinctive spotted wings and graceful movements, these rays glide through the clear waters around Puerto Rico's reefs and coastal areas.
Brown Pelicans
A familiar sight along Puerto Rico's coastline, brown pelicans patrol the water from above before plunging headfirst into the sea to catch fish.
Antillean Manatees
These gentle marine mammals inhabit Puerto Rico's sheltered coastal waters and are occasionally spotted near the marina and surrounding shoreline.
Magnificent Frigatebirds
With their long, angular wings and deeply forked tails, frigatebirds soar effortlessly over the ocean, sometimes following feeding activity far offshore.
